We’re on vacation this week. Last weekend, on a whim, we planned a test overnight stay in our Daihatsu Materia to see if that would be an option for our next trip to Spain. Simone really wanted to go to the North Sea. Since we hadn’t prepared our gear properly, we decided to stay at a hotel instead. Because it’s currently peak season, there was only one night left available. We booked it right away.
On Wednesday afternoon, we set off by car. The GPS guided us along the A2 toward Hanover and then onto the A27. Around 5:30 p.m., we arrived at the Boutique Hotel Kenny & Henry in Cuhaven-Duhnen.
After checking in, we made our way to the North Sea beach, where it was low tide. We walked barefoot for a bit through the mudflats, which were pleasantly warmed by the sun.
Afterward, we strolled along the beach promenade and found a seafood restaurant where we enjoyed a leisurely meal and drinks before returning to the hotel. We watched another episode of an East Frisian crime drama on TV before falling asleep, exhausted. The night was quite peaceful, and fortunately, it wasn’t too warm.
The next morning, after showering, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast at the hotel. We checked out, packed our things into the car, and walked back to the beach, where this time we had to pay a daily admission fee of €4.40 per person to access the beach. It was low tide again. We took off our shoes and socks and walked through the mudflats, going much farther than we had the night before. There was quite a bit of activity. In the distance, we saw scattered individuals, couples, families, and guided groups. There were also a few horse-drawn carriages on the move. As the tide came in, we slowly walked back through the water toward the beach. It was a unique and exciting experience.
In the afternoon, we picked up some fish sandwiches fresh from the oven and bought a few fun decorative birds for our garden. At the Italian restaurant, we drank latte macchiato and ate ice cream, which was clearly too sweet—especially for Simone. She’s just not used to that much sugar anymore.
We walked back to the car and drove about 3 km to the neighboring district of Döse. There, we walked up the dike toward the Kugelbake, sat on a bench, and watched the ships go by.
In the early evening, we headed home.
